Four Horsemen - Famine

Description

So to continue some of my own uploads, here is the start of a 4 part project I produced for my 3rd Year Graphic Design Project (something similar to Hoshi's Seven Sins). I wanted to display my ability to produced highly detailed concepts of the Four Horsemen of the Apolcalypse based around one of my favourite game series; Darksiders. The original concepts for the games amazed me and this inspired these.

Now for Darksiders, it was planned that all but Fury would be male, Fury being female. So I took that as a premise to create 3 male Horsemen and create Famine with a feminine body.

They all have different meanings that I tried to portray through the pictures;

Death - The master puppeteer who pulls the strings of fate to cause Death. In his picture he is controling a man who is about to murder a terrified woman as death does not discriminate. I used cold colours for his colour scheme to reflect Death.

Famine - She purposely starves herself, putting Famine upon herself to remain thin (call it Vanity) by sealing her mouth off with her mask. She forces this on others whether they like it or not as displayed by the hands reaching out for her. Her colour scheme of golds and silvers was meant to display she would rather wear her fortune than spend it on food and her colour scheme was to reflect sickness that can be caused by Famine.

Pestilence - The scientist behind many diseases who manipulates from the background by poisoining water, infecting vermin and causing wide spread panic from his diseases. Again he doesn't discriminate and everything is his potential victim. He dons a scientific kind of mask that he uses to examine his subjects. His colour scheme and background reflects sickness, greens are commonly used where referring to ill people.

War - He plays out War as pieces of a Chess board, both sides constantly opposing each other. He prides himself in his work as he always wins no matter who's king falls. His mask was split to show he looks at both sides of the chess board. His colour schemes of crimson reflect blood that is shed on the battle field.

These pictures where all achieved by first sketching each image out, then scanning them into Adobe Photoshop CS 3 where they were digital inked, blocking out certain areas with blocks of black (a style I picked up from the game Legend of Zelda: Majora's Mask) and then digitally coloured it and added the typography. They all bear the Japanese Symbol for their Horseman.

So beautiful. I also looked at your concepts behind this image- some really good ideas.
